Wheeled Sneakers, Roller Shoes, Heelys & Gliders
Heelys are the new sneakers that have a detachable wheel in the heel. When the
wheel is out, kids can zip down sidewalks, across playgrounds and through malls.
It’s called heeling, named after Heelys, the most popular brand of wheeled sneakers.
Although it may sound like great fun, there are many risks and dangers. In fact
the wheeled sneakers made the 2006 W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm)
“10 Worst Toys” list. Reported injuries are similar to those of inline skating
and include broken wrists, elbows and ankles, back injuries, head injuries, cuts
and bruises.
A few safety basics:
- There is a definite learning curve with wheeled sneakers and even the manufacturers
highly recommend wearing helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads when wearing
the skate shoes.
- Skate only on smooth, stable and dry surfaces. Do not try to skate over rocks,
sand or wet surfaces.
- Remove the wheels when using Heelys as traditional shoes.
- Do not use Heelys in crowded areas, near traffic or stairs, and do not go faster
than you can run.
- Keep in mind that many public areas including schools and malls have banned the
use of wheeled sneakers.
- Always remember to wear protective gear when using any type wheeled shoes or
sneakers.
