Our "At School" initiatives bring safety to our children through the following:
Safety Patrols
One of Safe Kids Upstate’s biggest programs is the Safety Patrol Program. Safe
Kids Upstate trains Safety Patrols at 54 Elementary Schools in Greenville, Pickens
and Oconee Counties. A training video, “Congratulations! You’re a Safety Patrol,”
was created by Safe Kids Upstate in 2004 and won a Telly Award. In addition to
training Safety Patrols and School Safety Leaders, Safe Kids Upstate also provides
equipment to each school and assists with the development of safe and efficient
carpool lines. Equipment distributed includes: hats, vests, rain ponchos, training
manuals, ID/pledge cards, merit pins, certificates of merit, and stop/slow signs.
Patrols are also rewarded with a trip to Paramount’s Carowinds Theme Park at the
end of each school year. In 2006, over 700 patrols attended the trip.
Pedestrian Safety
Pedestrian injury remains the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related
death among children ages 5 to 14. Through cooperation with local school districts
and sponsorship from FedEx Express, Safe Kids Upstate promotes pedestrian safety.
Annually, schools participate in “Walk this Way” – a campaign teaching safe pedestrian
behaviors. SKU staff assists in developing school safety committees and evaluating
walkability features, including environmental hazards surrounding schools and
communities.
