Our Safe Kids "At Home” initiative provides community awareness campaigns, education,
and injury prevention programs with the following safety initiatives:
Buddy’s Safety House
Buddy’s Safety House is Safe Kids Upstate’s award-winning mobile home safety
exhibit. Developed in 1998 by Greenville Hospital System Children’s Hospital
Development Council, this innovative safety education tool helps prevent accidental
injuries, the leading cause of death among children ages 0 to 14.
The house is an 8- by 13-foot interactive exhibit equipped with an adult-sized
kitchen, living room and bathroom. After a short introduction on home safety,
children pretend to be safety inspectors as they move through the house searching
for common safety hazards. Healthcare professionals from Safe Kids Upstate, the
Children’s Intensive Care, Pediatric and Women’s Education Units of the Greenville
Hospital System carefully selected each dangerous item. Trained children’s advocates
interact with the children, explaining each potential hazard. The advocates also
hand out safety checklists that children use to inspect their own homes for dangers.
Over the years Safe Kids Upstate has presented Buddy’s Safety House at countless
health and safety fairs, business grand openings and safety days, and other community
events. Since its creation this safety exhibit has hosted over 80,000 children
and their families. Buddy’s House has visited every public elementary school in
the Greenville County School district as well as many day care centers, churches
and civic groups. In addition to thousands of children touring each year, the
exhibit is transported on major highways to our neighboring counties in Pickens
and Oconee. The house won Safe Kids Worldwide’s Most Innovative Program of 1997.
Buddy’s Safe House, sponsored by Remax, is highly visible as it travels to elementary
schools, child development centers and many community events each year. Additional
sponsors will also have the opportunity to place their logos on Buddy’s Home Safety
Checklist (English & Spanish).
Cribs for Kids is a pilot program brought to you by Greenville Hospital System
Children’s Hospital Infant Apnea Program and Safe Kids Upstate. The program aims
to reduce the number of infant deaths due to unsafe sleeping environments. Many
families who cannot afford a crib or who lack education about safe sleep put their
babies at great risk of suffocation, falls, or entrapment. The Cribs for Kids
program is bringing free education and portable cribs to eligible families. Read more.
Fire Safety Programs
Safe Kids Upstate Coalition provides fire education to children in elementary
schools and child development centers, as well as community events through presentations,
training workshops, and puppet shows. We also provide discounted (or free) smoke
detectors through community partnerships.
One interactive teaching tool is our “Fire Safety Game," which teaches children
about fire safety and prevention with personal one-on-one interaction with fire
safety experts. The children enjoy tossing beanbags to put out the fire after
they correctly answer a fire safety question.
Safe Kids can help connect your local school or daycare with the fire department
serving your area. We also have an interactive Fire Safety House in partnership
with the Duncan Chapel Fire Department for fire safety presentations.
Gun Safety
Coalition members provide gun safety presentations and disseminate gunlocks through
community partnerships.
Poison Safety
Safe Kids Upstate has created the “Fishing Game” that teaches children about
poison hazards around the house. Play our Poison Safety Game now. We also distribute seasonal handouts and poison prevention tips throughout
the community.
